James King

James’ career has spanned fundraising, strategy consultation and management of early-stage companies for the past decade. He has founded multiple businesses, including Fig, which he created to provide a pragmatic new approach to supporting and investing in high-growth companies. He founded Fig with the support of private investors, who wanted to see a more consistent and practical approach to sourcing deal flow.

James founded New Model with the aim of delivering fast, intelligent capital to high-growth companies. James is responsible for product and service development at Fig and New Model.  Since founding New Model he launched the Evergreen Discretionary Asset Management Scheme, the Athletic Angel Advisory Accounts, the Investor Relief Fund and Managed Account Services. As well as equity investment, raising debt, restructuring complex international corporate structures, purchasing secondary shares of listed companies and acquiring IP rights, since founding New Model, he has also managed investments in alternative asset classes including the refinancing of a property loan book and the sale of corporate bonds.

Mark Hanington

Mark read Philosophy at the University of Leeds before beginning his career at Henderson Global Investors. Mark joined Fig, where he is Managing Director, in May 2010. He co-founded New Model Venture Capital in 2011 and has had compliance and operational oversight since. Mark has raised investment for New Model, Fig and Fig portfolio companies, leads the Portfolio Management team at Fig and is on the Board of a number of the Fig portfolio companies.

Robin McIlvenny

Robin has more than 30 years of experience in commercial and investment banking, having worked in senior positions with Deutsche Bank, Security Pacific National Bank, Creditanstalt and JP Morgan Group. From 1991 to 2003, Robin was CEO of Gulf-based investment bank Bahrain International Bank and Chairman of leading UK property developer Crown Dilmun Holdings. He has a wealth of expertise at investment committee level and exit strategy execution gained in the US, European and Far East private equity markets. Robin was also an adviser to the UK Government’s Department of International Trade, overseeing high-value inward investment projects for innovation and venture capital.

Alongside his 20 years of private equity and venture capital investment experience, Robin is an active and highly successful angel investor, having made a total of 29 early-stage investments over the past 18 years. To date, 15 of these investments have been exited.

David Marshall

David has specialised in all aspects of private equity for more than 30 years, having led his first cross-border, leveraged management buyout in 1983. He has since completed more than 100 transactions in the UK, Europe and the USA as a principal investor, equity partner, corporate finance adviser or lender (mezzanine and senior debt), ranging from £100,000 to more than £1bn.

After spending three years in a senior position in a merchant banking operation for a European bank in New York, David spent eight years at a European investment bank as Head of European Structured Finance. He was responsible for all European acquisition finance with teams in Paris, Frankfurt, Milan, Lisbon, Helsinki and Stockholm as well as private equity investing in the UK. David was also responsible for European securitisation activities.

In the past eight years David has been a senior partner in a corporate finance boutique, responsible for all financial sponsor transactions and principal investment opportunities, as well as advising and investing for his own account.

Matt Cunningham

Matt has worked with the team for eight years as a Partner at Waterfront Solicitors.

Recognised in Chambers UK 2016 as a leading legal advisor for venture capital, Matt joined Waterfront’s IT team in 2007 having been in-house at Telehouse Europe, a leading provider of co-location services to the IT and telecoms industries. In 2009 he established the corporate team and, following the success of that team was promoted to Partner in early 2012. Matt advises clients on a wide range of corporate matters, including setting up businesses, angel and venture capital investments, joint ventures and Mergers & Acquisitions. He has particular expertise in advising entrepreneurs and investors in the IT, technology and digital media sectors.

Marco Geninazza Director of Fig Operations

Marco spent 11 years in Marketing, PR and Event Management. It was during this time that he helped to launch Fig with James King as well as start his own events company, which he subsequently sold. Marco is Operations Director at Fig.

Marco provides operation support to Fig, the Fig and New Model Portfolio as well as providing portfolio management services for Scratch Meals and Innoture.

Adam Stankiewicz Associate

Adam joined New Model in 2012 as an Analyst, and is now an Associate having left a full time role with New Model to become an integral part of portfolio company DUFL’s senior management team. He is responsible for deal origination and evaluation of investment opportunities. He also supports New Model in their corporate finance work, where he has structured financial products and advised on M&A transactions for public companies.

Adam began his career as an engineer at PACCAR and graduated from UCL with an MSc in Mechanical Engineering. He serves on the board of portfolio company, Eulysis, and led New Model’s investment into Live Better With.
